Shayan Shamal
YSP Slemani
Shayan Shamal Abu Baker from Slemani, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is my senior year studying English Language and Literature at the University of Sulaimani, and I am 22 years old. Looking back to the first workshop I attended in the YSP program, I remember thinking I had joined the wrong program – I did not know we would practice journalistic writing! Yet that first workshop sparked my interest in writing in a different field than I was used to. We practiced more and more and received feedback according to our own work. The interactive program allowed me to learn different ways of teaching, make lifelong connections and friendships, and open the door of journalism to me. Looking forward, I feel more confident exploring journalism and seizing the opportunities it offers in transmitting messages – in addition to my field: literature.
